WordPress Plug-Ins Powering Knox

January - 31 - 2008

NOTE – This list is NOT current anymore, read the date;)

Powering… not the right word. I power this blog but I do use some plug-ins.

Yes, this blog is built on WordPress. I’ve been asked a few times what plug-ins I use so I’ll list them out and link to where you can get them.

Here’s what I use and what they do: Read the rest of this entry »

Sloppy and unethical SEO’s are walking a fine line between competitive SEO and committing crimes.

I’m getting a lot of queries for some terms that most wouldn’t see on this site for the posts containing those words are now deep inside.

I’m also getting a lot of hits from known ip’s that are watching and waiting for an opinion or observation about a current happening in the SEO world concerning a niche I don’t work within anymore – real estate.

Yes, I’m following it. Want my opinion?

iPhone Detection and Redirection

January - 24 - 2008

iphone browserYes, you can detect when an iPhone or iPod Touch is browsing your website, and direct them to an iPhone friendly version.

Just insert the following code in the header of your page and amend it to address your target (iPhone version) location.

UPDATED – As of iPhone Safari 2, the script isn’t accurate. The new Updated script is here.

Thanks to Chris Bailey at Used Boats for bringing this to attention and re-writing the script for us.

I’ve been irritated seeing websites that say “If you’re using an iPhone, click here” – C’mon, people don’t want to go through that and coders need to anticipate this. Seamless to users and polishes your project.

January - 24 - 2008

Google Sets provides lists of what your users type into a search box to find – hopefully you.

iPhone Template Update

January - 24 - 2008

Many (very many) have used my iPhone web app template but I’ve added a few enhancements. Hopefully you come back to find it. It lists some tips for coding your site, corrects some paragraph layout bugs since version 1.1.1, adds custom web clips icons and is now quicker loading. It has examples built in to link to phone numbers and maps too. Oh, and audio/video files without flash.

Comments on this is closed, just refer to the original post.  Enjoy the template!

Remember, if coding is intimidating, you can use Wordpress to build an iPhone website too.

Custom iPhone Icons for Web Apps

January - 23 - 2008

Real quick iPhone and Touch developers.

If you want to have a custom icon shown on the home screen when someone makes a web-clipping of your site instead of a thumbnail of the page, it’s very easy. Not only does it polish off your efforts, it also makes the clipping more useful for your users.

It’s a two step process.

iPhone Color Picker Web App

January - 22 - 2008

I couldn’t resist.

You all know I develop for the iPhone as well as my “real job” – so here’s the predictable follow-up article for the color picker post below.

Apple accepted it – nice.

After presenting the color picker tool, I ported it to the iPhone. I thought it would be handy for client meetings, especially for those Read the rest of this entry »

Web designers, I’m offering a color-picker tool today. It’s linked over on the sidebar for easy reference if you want to use it later.

Web designers can add this to their site for their clients. If a client finds a color palette desirable for their web site, the three RGB numbers can be used to apply actual HEX values to the client web site, assuring a perfect match with the client wish.

Feel free to use it here, or use it in your own web site.

WordPress by default will let Ping-o-matic know you have updated posts and then ping a few other services.

A ‘Ping’ is a basic program that lets you verify that a particular Internet address exists and can accept requests. The verb ping in the Blog world means the act of notifying a service you have updated content.

So once you’ve updated your blog, you should let such a service know that you have your blog has been updated – so Ping more of them! Read the rest of this entry »

  • Tell Them It’s Google Probation

    October - 26 - 2006

There always come the time you’re asked about the “sandbox” by your clients – the “time delay”, whatever you may call it, whatever they may think it is. While it’s possible to defeat this “filter” you need to be cautious and not promise success. Instead, I resort to a little metaphor I call [...]

  • SEO As Afterthought Can Kill Your Business

    November - 20 - 2006

I can understand the thought process. A company holds a meeting and it’s decided that they want/need a website. They shop around, gather bids and ultimately write a huge check to some firm or somebody for a state-of-the-art website with so many bells and whistles that it would make Cpt. Kirk envious. [...]
