Fixing iPhone Stuck Pixels

August - 5 - 2007 Share

You love your iPhone, but like me, you may have began to see some stuck pixels. Stuck pixels are not dead pixels – they’re stuck on a color and don’t refresh with screen redraws.

“Solutions” abound on the web to try to fix the stuck pixels on your iPhone but they are silly and uses an animated .gif to cycle through the various colors.

Though these work for standard LCD displays on actual computers, they don’t on the iPhone because the processor speed doesn’t allow the .gif to animate quickly enough to affect the display.

Frustrated with my one stuck pixel I made a file viewable on the iPhone that uses javascript to cycle the colors by actual hex color at a frequency needed to help out you iPhone users with this frustrating blemish.

iPhone users, click here to enter. Let it roll for a little while (expect some heat) and don’t worry about the display brightness dimmin’ over time, I made it refresh before the phone’s auto-brightness takes over. The repair window is sized for the iPhone. If the menu is in the way, just rotate it.

Though there is no guarantee this will work in YOUR case, it has mine and one colleague. If you find other solutions please let me know and I’ll get it exposed for the rest of us. ‘Til then, I hope this helps you.

If you have found this useful, could you consider buying me a cup of coffee?

 I was upset about my few stuck pixels and did not want to turn in my iphone for another new one. This totally worked on fixing my screen. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

  3. zenon says:

hi nox. today i found out that i have about three or four stuck pixels. i do not know if their dead. but they are colored(some of them blue) well i run the app for about 2 times 5-6 minites each and i applied some presure also. it seems that it didn’t work. i am a bit of worried letting the app running longer cause when i exit the app and trying to run a video my screen acts really weird showing the video really messed up till i restart it.

  4. Jake says:

Hello, Knox. I got this one stuck white pixel at the left side of the screen and I wanted to run your app. But I have a question, will this stick more pixels by any chance? And what are the causes of stuck pixels? Thanks.

  5. Knox says:

Drew – Noble prize would be nice, but a donation is too:)
    Glad it helped you.

  6. Kenneth says:

Hey Knox, thanks for the app!

At first there was a blue pixel that was flashing off and on, and recently it remained permanent. After running the program for around 20 minutes i pressed around the pixel with my finger nail and it disappeared.

What’s kinda funny is it comes back sometimes like a phantom pixel, but when i rub around it, it disappears again.

I wonder if I have to use your app over and over since it feels like it may occur again. Thankfully it hasn’t popped up again, and if it does I’ll be sure to use your app!

    anyways, great job!!

  7. Ellis says:

    knox, thank you so much!

i have had my ipod touch since like october.
working perfect then a few hours ago i discover a red pixel dead center of screen.

tried many ’solutions’ none f which worked.

yours of course was the solution.

noticed the pixel flickering and then massaged the screen and surrounding area.

my ipod is restored to normality

    thank you again!

  8. zenon says:

Hello Knox and sorry for mispelled your name on my first post. I tried you method several times and although it didn’t work i now that its a great app. I just wonder if you got any other ways of playing the flash colors on my ipod cause i do want to use it on full screen and safari browser to allow that. Also i do not know how much pressure should i put on the screen I’m bit of afraid put a lot of pressure. I do pull my fingers of when i notice that the LSD screen start to make those weird colors around my finger.

  9. gorka says:

hello, well it doesnt work on my ipod, its a white dot not a greenish, i run the app for 30 min and nothing hapend, well i think its luck. thnks anyway

  10. Knox says:

zenon – 5 minutes won’t be enough from the collective feedback i have. Pressure: don’t be too scared. Yes, there will be a little swirling of color, that’s normal, and a good sigh that you are applying enough (don’t go gung-ho though, I’m not responsible if you crack it – use common sense:) I’d let it go longer nad press next to the pixel a bit, if it’s going to work you will see it happen before your eyes. GOOD LUCK.

    k

  11. Knox says:

    gorka – I’m sorry:(

Jake – No one has contacted me saying that – and yes, I used it on my 2 iPhones as well. I’m sure “over-doing” it isn’t good though :???:

Cause of stuck pixels – bad luck, physical defect, and more bad luck. It rains on some days too. Most likely, you have them on a desktop LCD as well – it happens with them.

  12. Ben says:

I have just bought a new iPhone and immediately saw an annoying blue stuck pixel slap bang in the middle of my screen. I was about to go back to the store when I Google’d and found your app.

Left the screen flashing for 10 mins, applied a little pressure, and now it’s gone.

    Thanks!

  13. antroh says:

    Hi there!
I’ve been trying this solution with my ipod touch, but my problem is that the stuck pixel is on the very left side of the screen, so I’m not able to push on it after a while of running the aplication, so the stuck pixel remains there =(
Anybody with the same problem? Any solution?
    Thanks mates!

  14. Knox says:

    antroh, that…. sucks

  15. Denis says:

Hey there, Bought an ipod touch on Halloween last year and noticed a blue dot which I knew straight away was a stuck pixel. In the past I had a G4 imac which had two which I did nothing about but this time investigated my options. I ran the video for a while and did nothing so tried pressing on the screen. The original blue dot is sorted. I have now one really feint dot instead. I guess it is really trial and error and a bit of luck. Still disappointing to get a dead pixel on such a small lcd screen that set me back $549 AUD. Not really good enough. Thanks for the tips and software though.

  16. Deb says:

Didn’t work for me…my dog liked the effect though.

  17. Mesh says:

    Knox,

This thing is amazing. I, in a drunken state, accidently threw my phone at the wall and of course stuck pixels became evident. Yeah this wasnt smart, but I am dumb.

As for this program, it really works. I wish I could explain how big this one grey spot was. it was literally a square centimeter. After using this program for even five minutes, and its fixing it slowely but surely.

    Thanks.

  18. marksedge says:

dude this is amazing great work.

a lot of people will love you for this.

    wowowowowo

  19. ScottyMac55 says:

wow! It really worked. In like 10 minutes. “Cup of coffee” headed your way, man! Thanks!

  20. Knox says:

ScottyMac55: Thanks so much – glad it helped and enjoy your iPhone!

  21. Santi says:

OMG YOURE THE BEST! It fixed all of them! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  22. erik says:

  24. J Daniel says:

This worked perfectly! I let the application run for a couple of minutes while turning my screen vertically and horizonally. I then applied pressure with my thumb and Walla! I was so frustrated about this when I’ve only had my iPhone for 24 hours! Thanks so much!

  25. Foreigner says:

Thank you loads. Im a foreign exchange student in America, just got the Ipod touch a month ago. Had been using it fine for a month, until suddenly this kid related to the family im staying with moves in.

Asks to use, uses it all day and gives back to me with a dead battery and guess what, a dead pixel. I know it wasnt like that when i got here from school so he didnt take proper care of it.

I was about to go knock him out cold until i tried to find this, found the site on a search engine and tried.

What i did was use one lamp right next to the screen and leave the program running for 35 minutes. After that the green bugger was flickering, so he was, and i massaged it for a while and now its gone!!!

I still want to knock him out but i guess know hes owing you one. Thanks for the application. Not giving my ipod to people i dont trust with it anymore, im not.

  26. antitofu says:

knox, thanks for the awesome finding! it worked it worked. left the iphone for 30mins and guess what? That silly lil green pixel disappeared!!! thanks dude. i owe you a beer

  27. Gavin says:

I had my ipod touch for a week when I discovered my little white pixel watching an apple keynote. I immediately thought it was dead, and was frustrated to find out you need three for apple to replace it. Anyways, I was sort of coming to terms with it, because it really only shows on a black background, and I for some reason decided to google up the problem. I’m running it right now with crossed fingers, I think I’m somewhere around 15 minutes now, o luck yet, but hopeful. It has started to slowly shift though!

It seems that the green and blue pixels are easiest to fix, white and red seem to be harder from what I’ve read here.

  28. Knox says:

  29. MIke says:

I got a red stuck pixel in the middle of the screen, Had the iphone no more than 24 hours when it appeared.
After running your test for 15 mins it was gone.
Thanks very much. I will consider a donation.

  30. Knox says:

Glad it helped you out Mike!

  31. MIke says:

hey knox, i had bad luck. it returned after 15 minutes. now i have been running the app for 20 minutes and its still there. let’s hope it will vanish. any other tips?

  32. Knox says:

Sorry to hear that. Are you in a cold climate? Its affected by temp, try massaging it too and after running it put it in your pocket. I wish it was 100% – good luck.

  33. MIke says:

its not that cold. hope it helps. I heard a guy who got rid of the problem by playing SUper Mario on NESrom. can you believe that?:)

  34. Sandro says:

Had a stuck blue pixel right in the middle of my Touch, now it’s gone. You’re getting a beer as soon as I have an income, bud.

  35. MIke says:

I told you before that the stuck pixel got back after 15 mins. i run the app for 60 minutes. it vanished and returned after 5 minutes, i massaged it for few seconds and it went away, now it has been gone for 3 hours. Thanks again!

  36. TonyG says:

Hey Knox, I’m sure you get this question a lot. Can this be run on an new 24″ iMac? I have a stuck red pixel dead center on my screen. I tried one java app on the web but that didn’t help. Thanks in advance!

  37. Knox says:

Tony – haven’t tried it, let me know how it goes.

  38. carouselboy says:

m8 thanks a lot after a few minutes my iphone screen was like out of the box again.

    THANKS A LOT M8!!

  39. Donovan says:

Thanks alot! The app worked like a charm, ran it for 5 mins and could actually watch it disappear when I was putting a bit pressure. Nice one!

  40. Ryan says:

I was about to give up after doing this for consecutive 30 min periods for a lil while, finally I achieved success. Thank you!!!!!!

  41. joethox says:

I bought my iphone imported from a shop here in nz, and its only been a week a really small white pixel that doesn’t go away even after i ran your website flash thing for 15 mins. I have been trying rub everytime after a bit but nothing.

Would you think the store would replace it after a week even though they import these?

  42. Knox says:

It’s worth a try, many say no but there have been some positive stories.

  43. Hollowhead says:

Hey i had a line about 1.5 mm long of stuck pixels.. after running this program and applying pressure it is probably 1/4 that size. so im guessing its fine to just keep it running and keep applying pressure.. its been going for maybe 10 min.

  44. VMR says:

Thank you! You have no idea what you have done for me by creating this program. I’m extremely OCD about my electronics. I bought a new psp ’cause my old one had a tiny but very annoying scratch that wouldn’t go away. The stuck pixels on my ipod touch nearly killed me. You just saved me like $700. YOU ARE MY NEW GOD.

  45. ericmatt says:

So I had my doubts about this thing. But I figured that the positive comments couldn’t be wrong. I knew that every situation is different so there would be a chance that mine would stay with that annoying pixel in its stuck state. I too, am OCD about my electronics. However, I ran this program for 30 minutes, pressed on the screen a little bit and watched as the pixel flickered and eventually fixed itself. We’ll see how long it stays that way. Until then, thank you SO much for this! I will also be making a donation!!

  46. gterrell says:

Many thanks. I had 1 white stuck pixel very near the center of my iPod Touch screen. I ran your app for about 15 minutes and applied gentle pressure around the area of the problem pixel and it is gone! Saved me a trip to the Apple Store.

  47. jdkphotos says:

I had a red stuck pixel and I ran this app but didnt have much luck at first..and the finger pressure thing didn’t work.. but while running the program again I tapped my iphone on my desk as I ran this app… Left side…..then right…facing up…and facing down and repeated about 3 times…and poof!!! Dead pixel was gone!!! Now you dont have to throw it down or anything…just a firm good tap worked for me

  48. Tonyscigars says:

I’m looking forward to running this app in a few days when my “new” iphone arrives… I got a great deal on it due to half a dozen stuck pixels.

  49. israeliguy says:

Thanks a lot, worked like a charm. Had a red pixel, run the program fro 15 minutes, then massaged it. At first I had a rough shock when more stuck pixels arrived. then they all disappeared. I’m very happy now.
