Knoxing – App Development, SEO, iPhones & Stuff

After a website becomes successful, after the SEO is on to newer projects, it happens.

A phone rings on the hip of the SEO responsible for that beautiful 1st page search result of last month. “What happened? Why did it fall?”
Here it is: short list.

  • Your site became stale
  • Link decay
  • Aggressive competition
  • You fell for an email scam
  • You tinkered with the code yourself
  • You thought you’d hold it w/o ongoing assessment of your market

Here’s what you should have done. Retained an SEO. Not “hire” one.

A “retained” SEO instinctively and loyally nurtures your website and it’s visibility, watches the competition, continually runs analysis of the forces working for and against your website and always considers the long term affects of any decision made concerning your site. A “hired” SEO will do their magic and then they’re gone.

Better than anything else I mentioned about retaining one is that all that work is done without you worrying. Success of the site is a reflection on the quality of the SEO’s service. If a link partner drops yours, no worries – it will be noticed and that site will be amended or their link will disappear – don’t worry because the retained SEO will get new ones – you do your job and we’ll do ours.

A retained SEO may cost more than a short-term consultant but you can rest assured that the guy that put your site on top is NOT now working for a competitor of yours – with intimate knowledge of your site, why it succeeded and how it can be defeated.

  1. Randall says:

You are so negetive. Look at you, you look like you’re reaching for a gun inside your coat. Why are you wearing glasses–to hide your guilt for being so mean spirited? Too bad you don’t know anything about the internet community. I’ve notified each key person in the industry of your tactics.

  2. Knox says:

I am reaching for a gun. Are you from Greenville?

  3. Randall says:

Just playing around. I did have a Greenville competitor of mine who sent me an email just like this. He is truly the idiot of my industry (pet grooming van conversions). Something is in the water down there.

  4. Ryan Wilke says:

Haha, You had me fooled…. I was like why the heck is this guy flying off the handle?

  5. Knox says:

Kinda a running joke with Randall – that did look odd.

  • Your Image & Your Website

    December - 16 - 2006

Businesses, institutions and governments all use the same tools and broadcast media – the buildings, logos, websites, brochures, press releases and speeches – all to convey their “image”, their “brand”. Individually and collectively the difficulty begins when we cross the line of believability – when that image we have for these businesses and individuals are [...]

  • Some Web Copy Kung Fu

    January - 8 - 2007

People seem to go to greater lengths to keep from losing something they have than they would to acquire something they don’t. The old adage “Fear of loss is greater than the desire for gain” is very true when writing web copy designed to sell. Web copy – this is NOT to be confused with [...]

    January - 13 - 2008

For those who groan at braggadociuos posts just move on. (Most likely to a different site) Several days ago I threw up a video on Denver in 3D using Google Earth. Coincidentally, I experienced the same thing personally yesterday. Yes, this is skite, but there’s nothing like being picked up in a helicopter by a [...]

  • Countdown to iPhone Anger about 3Gs

    June - 16 - 2009

I admit I’m a fan of the iPhone.  But, unlike those that camp out for days to be one of the first to acquire a new Apple toy (like these guys a week ahead of the release), I am waiting a week or so. Yeah, my phone has been dropped and kicked a few times [...]

  • Tell Them It’s Google Probation

    October - 26 - 2006

There always come the time you’re asked about the “sandbox” by your clients – the “time delay”, whatever you may call it, whatever they may think it is. While it’s possible to defeat this “filter” you need to be cautious and not promise success. Instead, I resort to a little metaphor I call “probation” and [...]

  • Retaining Readers By Adding Content

    January - 2 - 2008

2007 is over. I’ve added the 4th Quarter ‘Bragstat’ below, with markers of when I posted here. The purpose though isn’t to say “look at my #’s” but to remind everyone that posting new content brings past readers back to your blog. Bottom line is that if your site goes stale, so will your numbers. [...]

I recently helped an associate who sadly was not happy with their host. So, they came to me for some REAL SEO and help. They used electricstores.com of Denver for a few years. • Graywolf Blog Hacked – Shared Feeling Of Rape

    January - 17 - 2007

I feel bad for Graywolf being hacked. He was on the hitlist of a proclaimed white hat seo. After this happened to me I understand the “icky feeling” of being violated. You gave me the notice I needed to update my stuff, thanks for that, at least. Before he even realized it had happened to [...]
